Do not waste your money : My low score for this book is not for the story itself but designated for this particular version of Uncle Tom's Cabin. I had wanted to read this story for a while now as it is considered a classic, and I like to challenge myself by reading classical novels, so I bought this from Amazon. However, this version is heavily abridged (and not indicated that it is so anywhere on the cover or inside). It seems like it's about half as long as the true, original story written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. After comparing what I have here to what is in the actual full length story, I am not even sure how they can pass this off as Uncle Tom's Cabin. I am sorely disappointed and will not be finishing this book as it is horribly written and not worth the read. Why they needed to come up with this dumbed down version is beyond me. I have selected various pages in a 1938 edition to compare to the pages in this book and they are the same. It doesn't appear to have been altered as some other publishers have chosen to do. It also has approximately 8 illustrations in it as well. Sadly though the publisher decided not to include the "Introduction", "Preface" or ending "Concluding Remarks". I would be happy to email a copy of these pages to whoever would like to have them. These portions are full of information and details of the time when the book was written. The dialect has been changed which makes for easier reading, but also takes away from the flavor of the original. Maybe half or more of the original is not in this book, and much of what is left out is the negative treatment of slaves by owners. Inside the cover of this old time favorite, Stowe easily takes readers inside the minds the slaves, the slave owners, and those with abolitionist-like minds. She skillfully winds you through the different paths of characters and creates a mostly satisfying conclusion. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Cory Briggs -- It deserves to be called an Epic Classic! : What made me take up and read this book again was the common disparaging term "Uncle Tom". Was the character Tom a fool, a traitor, or a hero? Well Tom betrays no one! Was he a fool? If you thoroughly understand the circumstances that he lived in then the answer is no. No the character Tom was a Christian who acted like Ghandi at times. Keep in mind there have been many plays produced that choose to paint Uncle Tom in a unfavorable light. This book is good! It tells the story of Tom's and Eliza's struggles and triumphs. You get a good idea how evil slavery was and is. By the way human trafficking prospers even as I write this! Slavery is not dead, it is alive and well in America! Do me one favor? Don't utter the phrase 'Uncle Tom until you finish this book, OK? ( Reviewed in the United States on July 30, 2018 )
• 5.0 out of 5 stars from Craig Haynes -- Uncle Tom, the Hero, but what happened : to this hero status? "Uncle Tom" is now a pejorative...we must reclaim the absolute hero status of this very positive literary character. Of course, the only way to do that is encourage folks to READ THE BOOK! So, folks, READ THE BOOK. You must be aware that this is a book of its time. The language takes a minute to get used to, but this is a riveting read and essentially a first-hand account of what slavery was through the eyes of a witness living at the time. Critiques by many say Stowe failed to fully humanize slaves as unique individuals; she stereotypes and reduces them to stereotypical behaviors and speech--all true. She does this with most of the characters in the book and she imbues others with preternatural wisdom, charm, and grace (e.g., Eva). THAT's LITERATURE, folks. Yet, the message in such urgently dire circumstances, from someone so deeply committed, must not be watered down, subtle or duplicitous! Stowe does use plain language (so to speak) and readily available images to which the folks of the time could relate. That does mean a kind of, dumbing-down, and the use of a short-hand in order to convey a message that, for the time, needed to be heard. Amazingly, UCT sold 300,000 copies in its first year...can you imagine! People were being reached with Stowe's message. Stowe wrote 30 other novels, a feat (as mother, wife, author, et al roles) I find extraordinary and she was fighting for woman's rights also. This is a major literary achievement. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Marina Livingstone -- A truly amazing book... : A truly amazing book, depicting the plight of slaves in 19th century USA. Even more amazing is the fact that the book was published at all, especially since strength of feeling meant it was banned in the southern states, while apathy and prejudice towards the slaves in the northern states seemed to suggest that many people didn't care about their treatment. My knowledge of the history of slavery was woefully limited before reading this book and I was really shocked at the callous, cruel and inhumane incidents that the author had either witnessed first hand, or heard about second/third hand. Religion plays a large part in the book and the way in which the northerners (the Union) and the southerners (Confederacy), both justify their actions before God is simply outrageous. Both sides are guilty of supreme arrogance, believing in the Divine nature of their own actions and in the middle, being horribly squeezed, is the African American slave, who has zero rights whatsoever. He/she can be purchased and sold like any item of household furniture; he/she is subject to the whims of a master who may scar, maim, murder and rape them without any legal consequences at all! The enormity of the misery of this situation is told in such a matter of fact way in the book, as to make it even more shocking! As a living historical record, it's a must read. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from SMBRAILSFORD -- Thought provoking : Aspects of this book are very troubling about how humans treat each other. It's difficult to read as the religious sentiment is unlike anything 21st century readers come across. That's before you experience the breaking up of black families ,tearing husband from wife, children from mother. The sale of the slaves was quite humane compared with their treatment on the plantation. It's difficult to understand how the white man who got himself into debt sells his best worker to write off these debts. The recently widowed wife who sells house, furniture and slaves to live comfortably with her father in a neighbouring state. Sections of this book should be used to educate us in Black Lives Matter. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from GoJoGlitz -- A Must Read : Amazed I've never read this before - a good story and always worthwhile reminding ourselves of the commonality of the human race and how quickly some people can become bullies and brutes. The author was quite clever in putting different viewpoints in the mouths of her characters, helping understand the varied approaches to slavery.
